The 23 awardees from WEAR Sustain Open Call 1 gathered at the offices of IMEC in Brussels on Tuesday 18 July 2017 to meet for the first time and present their projects to each other. The representatives from each team also took part in a series of sessions aimed at helping them over the next six months of their projects.
Dr Heritiana Ranaivoson (IMEC) welcomed the teams and hosted the presentation session where each team presented their funded projects and took questions from the group. The questions focussed on the innovations and motivations of each team, and enabled everyone to see the range of projects being worked on.
Jan Vansteenlandt, Co-founder of We Connect Data, then gave an overview of the WEAR Sustain eco-system map and how each team can use it to build their network and share information.
This was followed by a session on the administration of the WEAR Sustain programme led by Lucy Bunnell (UCA), with support from Dr Stavri Nikolov (Digital Spaces Living Lab). This was a useful collaborative session with the teams getting clarity on the support available to them through WEAR Sustain and for the WEAR Consortium to develop an understanding of the issues facing the teams.
The final session was an interactive workshop led by James Weaver (QMUL), looking at the genesis of each team and how they plan to communicate going forwards. This information will be used to form part of a research project around interaction in interdisciplinary teams and also be used in the Sustainability Toolkit to be disseminated by WEAR Sustain at the end of 2018.
The Induction Day closed with networking drinks with all present where teams were able to share their experiences so far and make connections for the future.
Overall it was incredibly interesting to hear from the teams and so encouraging to see them already starting to collaborate and share knowledge.
